What Have They Done!

70 percent of Americans have a question for the Republican members of the House of Representative; “What have you done?” The majority of Americans don’t really care how or why Republicans got to a position where the government is closed and the country’s credit is threatened, a stance that just months ago John Boehner assured Americans would not occur.

Americans want the government opened for business.

Americans want the debt ceiling increased.

Increasing the debt ceiling is nothing more than paying the debt that Congress already agreed to fund. Increasing the debt ceiling is not increasing the debt.

Then, Americans would like these people to go back to the people who contribute absurd amounts of money to gain their favor and tell them to leave politics alone.

Members of Congress are disdained by the majority of people that elected them.

More than at any time in history, political self-interest runs rampant in Washington, touching millions of Americans tragically. The families of soldiers who have died protecting our freedom are not being paid their guaranteed death benefit. Their families have to pay to travel to Dover Air Force Base to claim their remains. Is this possible? Has there ever been a better reason to stand down? The whole principal of the military is that government has your back. Not this Congress.

Republicans spin and spin but the simple fact is that Republican John Boehner refuses to bring the clean CR to open the government to the floor. The only possible reason for Boehner’s position is that the bill will pass. Can this corruption be permitted to continue?

The real reason Boehner will not bring the clean CR to the floor is that his party is being paid not to do the right thing. In fact, his party is being paid to close government and to hold a sledge hammer over the American people, knowing and unknowing, by backers who could care less about those who are less fortunate.

Men, women and children are not being provided the life support therapies that the government has administered through the National Institute of Health. Millions of children cannot go to daycare. 500,000 government workers and thousands of private citizens in related fields are out of work and more private sector layoffs are likely to occur.

Let’s be clear. Congress is paid to run government and pay the bills. In this case, extending the debt ceiling is paying the very bills that they authorized just months ago. Is this possible?

The humanness of this shutdown is tragic.

The Republicans now threaten to default the national debt, default on international loans, deny social security payments, cut Medicare and Medicaid benefits and close any number of governmental research programs.

In absurd comments by Tea Party members, there will be no repercussions from this default. How short sighted and ignorant can an elected official serving the people of the United States of America be?

A US government default will throw national and international markets into a tailspin and have a catastrophic effect on global economies. Default is likely to throw the country into something worse than the worst recession we have ever experienced. One absurd Republican congressman actually compared running the US government like running his family budget! Is this possible?

The bottom line is that hard working Americans, who for some reason voted for these people, will, once again be called upon to bail out banks, suffer enormous unemployment levels and undergo millions more foreclosures.

Late Tuesday afternoon, John Boehner declined to talk about the government shutdown and changed direction to threaten default.  Boehner only accepted two questions from the media before hurriedly dismissing the press corps. He is desperately trying to avoid answering why the clan CR cannot come to the floor.

Boehner is lost in his own rhetoric and lacks the personal integrity and sense of public responsibility to put the clean CR to a vote. The CR to open government was approved by the Senate prior to the shutdown.

This Republican-inflicted drama is taking a real toll on the citizenry, the economy, the markets and the USD.

Boehner has stated that there is not enough support to pass the clean CR but analysts contest his statement. The first question is why not bring the resolution to the floor so that the populace knows who has voted against it? American voters need to start taking names on the shutdown and on the threat of default.

Meanwhile, members of the worst Congress in the history of the country are still receiving their pay.

Unlike the police who protect them and the families of the servicemen who protect them, Congressional members are still being paid. One Republican member said she, “Was still working so she should be paid.” Really? Does that mean that the capitol police who last week risked their lives to defined an invader and who are not being paid are not working?

The hypocrisy of this situation is unfathomable.

  • Global stocks listed on the 45-country MSCI world equity index fell 0.7 percent.
  • The Dow Jones lost 159.71 points (1.07 percent).
  • The S&P 500 was off 20.67 points (1.2e3 percent).
  • The Nasdaq Composite was off 75.54 points (2.0 percent).
  • The benchmark 10-year Treasury note was down 2/32 with a yield of 2.6375 percent.
  • The CBOE volatility index, a measure of Wall Street anxiety, climbed to 20.66, up from Monday..
  • US crude oil rose 46 cents on Tuesday.
  • International investors are shying away from US equities.

The USD is regarded as vulnerable and the economy is losing ground every day that the shutdown continues.
